Woman jailed for credit lies

03/01/2006 12:44:00

A woman who made a series of lies to obtain loans and credit worth more than £100,000 has been put behind bars for a year.

Janet Currie, a 53-year-old former nanny from Barkestone-le-Vale, used the money to pay back some of her debts before racking up more debt, Nottingham's Evening Post reports.

Ms Currie was able to obtain more credit by making small alterations to her name and date of birth that were enough to fool banks, which were forced to write off her debts.

Judge Michael Pert QC said: "You didn't even accept what you had done. It is no mitigation for you for banks to write off debts. It's galling for someone like you to be getting the benefit of £100,000."

Ms Currie had run up debts on a Barclaycard and Marks & Spencer account and was eventually found guilty of 11 counts of obtaining property by deception, a total that came to a staggering £104,065.95.
