'Winter of discontent' ahead due to fuel price hikes

18/07/2008 17:34:00

Today's (July 18th) prediction of a potential 60 per cent rise in gas prices may cause an extra 2.4 million people to fall into fuel poverty, a comparison website has suggested.

Responding to the announcement from British Gas owner Centrica, uSwitch.com remarked "the worst has been confirmed".

According to calculations from the free online resource, the predicted forecast for the number of people who will suffer as a result of this bout of soaring fuel prices amounts to a 53 per cent increase.

"Coupled with the credit crunch and the ongoing battle to make their money go further, consumers should steel themselves for a winter of discontent - the days of cheap energy aren't just over, they now seem to be extinct," the company said in its statement.

In other debt news, a report in The Scotsman said dozens of "struggling" taxi drivers working in Edinburgh are having to leave their jobs due to rising costs of petrol.
