Small businesses 'in favour' of minimum wage

21/07/2008 17:33:00

Most small businesses will be generally satisfied with recent changes to be applied to the national minimum wage, according to a report.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has theorised that most small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are likely to support the recent changes in the national minimum wage, making the official rate £5.73 per hour, effective from October 2008.

Simon Briault, spokesperson for the FSB, highlighted a main benefit of having a minimum wage is that "the minority of dishonest employers are not able to undercut the vast majority, who pay fairly".

"In the last couple of years, the changes to the minimum wage have been pretty much in line with inflation, which is something that we think is sensible," he added.

He went on to say he does not think the level of the minimum wage will impact the number of people small businesses look to employ.

The FSB claims to be the largest campaigning pressure group promoting and protecting the interests of the self-employed and owners of small companies.
