Sick of debt

20/01/2006 11:21:00

If you have ever felt that your health has been suffering at the hands of your money problems, you are not alone.

A new report has labelled such a phenomenon as 'Money Sickness Syndrome', with symptoms ranging from shortness of breath, headaches, palpitations, nausea, sleeplessness and lack of appetite.

More than two in five people in the UK are believed to suffer from such a syndrome.

The man behind the report, GP and leading mental health expert Dr Roger Henderson, said: "Money worries can cause significant problems in relationships, and people who suffer as a result are often in worse health than those who are in control of their finances.

"A quarter of people in debt are receiving treatment for stress, depression and anxiety from their GP."

Furthermore, research from Axa shows that money matters force four million people in the UK to take time off work, with a further 11 million seeing their sex lives suffer as a consequence.
