Runcorn repossessions reveal rise

15/12/2005 17:12:00

Home repossessions in Runcorn have increased by 39 per cent in the last 12 months as more and more people fail to keep on top of their mortgage repayments.

The increase in repossessions was revealed by government figures of county court mortgage repossessions over the last year.

Personal debt triggered by, among other things, credit card repayments, has led many people in Runcorn to suffer, with 43 homes being repossessed in the town.

Halton's Euro MP, Chris Davies, said: "People should be able to get quick and easy access to help as soon as they start having money troubles. All too quickly a small debt grows out of control and people don't know where to turn."

A Citizens' Advice Bureau spokesman gave further guidance: "Don't panic. And don't ignore the problem, it won't go away. Don't take out any further credit - you'll only get yourself in worse trouble.

"Work out your most important debts - these are the ones where the creditor has a drastic sanction like repossession. You need to agree repayments on these debts first before tackling your credit debts."
