Prison is possible for fraudster

25/01/2006 15:36:00

A 40-year-old woman from Blackburn has pleaded guilty to large scale fraud from which she unlawfully obtained in the region of £40,000.

Julie Cafferty admitted to using a false instrument with intent to have it accepted as genuine for the purpose of a second mortgage and applications for loans and credit cards, the Lancashire Evening Telegraph reports.

What appears unusual in this case, however, is that Ms Cafferty was not considered to have used the money to spend frivolously, but was instead diverting the money to manage her finances.

Defence barrister Kath Johnson said: "Debts had spiralled and then a credit card was applied for and that was used to pay off other cards. There are no allegations that the money was used to fund a lavish lifestyle."

Ms Cafferty is now due to be sentenced on February 17th.
