Petrol prices highest for 20 years

British motorists are now paying up to 109.8 pence per litre for petrol which is the highest fuel price in the UK for 20 years, one financial expert has claimed.

uSwitch.com said that motorists pay £61 to fill their tank, which is a rise of over a quarter compared with the £49.22 it cost for a full tank in 2007.

However, the forecasts from the financial advisors suggest that prices are set to go up by a further 37 per cent reaching £1.50 per litre in 2009.

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy with uSwitch.com, said that these latest predictions could be enough to force motorists off the road altogether.

"Petrol prices are predicted to increase a further 37 per cent by next year but have already rocketed by 216 per cent since 1988 when fuel was just 34.7p per litre," she continued.

Previous research from uSwitch showed that car owners spend 26 per cent more on insurance by staying with their manufacturer rather than shopping around for the best deal.
