Peterborough CAB sees rise in demand

20/01/2006 11:21:00

The Citizens' Advice Bureau (CAB) in Peterborough has revealed that, over the past year, people have come to seek advice for debts totalling £4 million.

Some 5,510 different debts were dealt with, with people owing an average of £8,000 to £13,000, although some people's debts were in six figures.

The centre has struggled to cope with the high demand of debt people seeking help, although 15 new staff are in the process of being trained to boost capacity.

Nigel Barnard, of Peterborough CAB, said: "Debt seems to be with us all year round, not just at Christmas. We get a tremendous amount of calls.

"People are using credit cards to live and to maintain the standard of life they have become accustomed to."

Mr Barnard also urged those in financial difficulty to seek help sooner rather than later.

"Debt problems can be extremely stressful and for many people admitting they have a problem with money can hurt their pride, because often they have managed for years without any problems," he said.
