People 'more likely to cut back' on things other than holidays

Despite the credit crunch taking over the UK, people are not prepared to give up their valued summer holiday, an expert has said.

This is due to many people considering their annual holiday to be "a necessity, not a luxury", according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

Recent research from ebookers.com showed over half of people saying taking a holiday was either important or absolutely necessary and would make sacrifices on nights out and items such as clothes and luxury groceries in order to make going on holiday easier financially.

Abta explained: "One way to escape the current economic gloom is to take a foreign holiday to go abroad. Can you imagine if you had to explain to your young children that they weren't going away on holiday this year?"

The ebookers.com survey showed over half of young families believing the economic climate would influence their holiday plans somewhat, whereas only 39 per cent of older families made the same statement.
