Research has shown rates in holiday resorts at home and away increase "drastically" in the peak school-holiday season, namely between mid-July and the first few weeks in August.
According to the latest study from Abbey Credit Cards, the first two weeks in August will cost the most for parents wanting to take their children away for a well-deserved holiday.
Premiums can rise by up to 52 per cent in some foreign holiday hotspots, the findings reveal, but by as much as 162 per cent in some resorts in the UK.
Callum Gibson, head of the financial group, points out how people who are finding the situation difficult can ease certain outgoings.
"It's ... important to avoid unnecessary costs once abroad, for example on cash machine withdrawals or spending on cards," he explains.
The Association of British Travel Agents recently said that despite the credit crunch, people are more willing to make financial cutbacks on other areas than sacrifice their annual break.
