Online shoppers need to act 'how they would when on the high street'

01/05/2008 10:00:00

Consumers using the internet to shop should behave as they would when on the high street, one financial expert has advised.

Financial risk management provider Experian said that by keeping personal records in a safe place and not allowing any suspicious organisations to gain access to them a consumer is protecting themselves against identity fraud which could in turn lead to debt.

Helen Lord, fraud and regulatory compliance director at Experian, said that shopping online should be a safe and pleasant experience.

"We’d advise customers to practice good habits like choosing not to store their details on a particular website and not using their credit card on a site that may not look reputable," she added.

APACS reported in March 2008 that online credit fraud was up by a quarter in the past year and now costs consumers £535.2 million.

The losses were largely due to the £92.5 million increase (77 per cent) in stolen UK credit cards being used abroad.
