Motorists should shop around for cheaper car insurance, say experts

Motorists should look around for cheaper car insurance deals as staying with the same insurer can cost up to 26 per cent more, one financial expert has warned.
New research from consumer advisers uSwitch.com showed that consumers pay 30 per cent more on average when buying their cover through a manufacturer rather than going directly to an underwriter.
uSwitch said that insuring a new Astra 1.9 cdti with Vauxhall costs an average of £316.05, but going straight to RBS Insurance which provide the cover for Vauxhall could bring the cost down to £287.70.
Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, said: "Motorists tempted to opt for 'on the spot' manufacturer insurance must be warned that unless they are getting a full year for free they will be paying more than they need to for their cover."
"This is good news for the manufacturer's profits, but bad news for motorists pockets," he added.
Meanwhile, research from the firm showed that recent price rises will leave learner drivers facing paying out an additional £14.4 million just to sit driving tests.
