More price hikes for energy customers

12/05/2008 16:13:00

Energy consumers could be facing more increases in their bills following an announcement by Centrica that its profits are being diminished by high wholesale costs.

Centrica, which owns British Gas, said that prices for wholesale gas and electricity are 92 and 100 per cent higher than a year ago.

Because of this, consumers could see their bills going up again after electricity and gas tariffs increased by 15 per cent during January of this year.

In a statement, the energy supplier said: "While the current outlook for gas prices does create a challenging environment for energy suppliers, we will take the necessary action to deliver reasonable margins in the retail business."

The number of British Gas customers has dropped from 16 million to 15.9 following the increases in January

According to predicted figures from price comparison experts uSwitch, if oil and wholesale prices for gas continue to rise then bills could reach nearly £1,400 by the end of the year.
