MEP calls for more debt help

A Cumbrian Euro MP has called for the Chancellor Gordon Brown to do more to help people who are in debt.
Chris Davies thinks that too many people are living a lifestyle that their means fail to match, leading to more repossessions and bankruptcies, the Westmorland Gazette reports.
With many households borrowing too much, Mr Davies wants to see independent advice centres for debt set up by the financial services industry to help the public.
He said: "People should be able to get quick and easy access to help as soon as they start having money troubles.
"All too quickly a small debt grows out of control and people don't know where to turn."
Government figures recently revealed that Cumbrian mortgage repossessions had risen by 41 per cent from the year before, while bankruptcies were up 25 per cent.
