Greater awareness needed for debt charities

20/12/2005 14:44:00

Not enough is being done to make people in debt aware of charities that can help them, new research has shown.

According to debt charity Elizabeth Finn Care, one in three Brits would turn to a friend or family to deal with money problems yet virtually no-one would seek out the help of a debt charity.

Jonathan Welfare, chief executive of Elizabeth Finn Care, said: "The single largest obstacle to helping people is the fact that they simply don't know how charities are able to help them.

"Making people in need more aware of the support we and other charities can offer, is a major challenge."

The situation isn't helped by the fact that those who do have debt difficulties are reluctant to talk about such issues.

One in five Brits struggle with poverty, yet only one in eight people know of someone who requires financial help.
