Families in the UK throw out up to a third of food bought, an amount that adds up to approximately £10 billion per year wasted according to new research has shown.

According to findings from the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap), the average household wastes hundreds of pounds on unused food every year.

Families with children throw out £610 while those without waste up to £420 on unused products.

Wrap chief executive Liz Goodwin said that wasting food has a significant impact upon the environment which is an issue for us all.

"What shocked me the most was the cost of our food waste at a time of rising food bills, and generally a tighter pull on our purse strings. It highlights that this is an economic and social issue, as well as about how much we understand the value of our food," she said.

Up to £1 billion worth of food was thought to be in date when it was thrown out.

Wrap is currently running a Love Food Hate Waste campaign to encourage consumers to be more careful about how much they spend on food.
