'Every penny and every pound counts'
22/07/2008 17:36:00
The financial climate at present makes "every penny and every pound count" for people tightly stretched by rising living costs, according to Moneysupermarket.com.
Responding to the cuts in fuel prices - by supermarkets Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons - the price comparison site said the development will offer some relief to households struggling to cope with the current economic downturn.
Tim Newhouse of the company believes hikes in fuel prices in 2008 are down to taxation and not a worldwide shortage of oil.
He said: "The driving factor on anything is the amount of tax the government levies. It's the government rather than OPEC [Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries] that dictates how much we pay for our petrol."
Figures from PetrolPrices.com have shown petrol theft from vehicles - known as siphoning - has increased year on year in its study of Greater Manchester, Northumberland and Essex.
Greater Manchester stood at the worst hit, which showed an extra 400 scenarios of people stealing fuel.
