Debt man caught drug smuggling

A man struggling with debt has been caught by customs officials trying to smuggle drugs through Glasgow Airport inside a cheese.

Spaniard Carlos Sitton Cano has pleaded guilty to trying to smuggle a kilo of cannabis, claiming that he had agreed to smuggle the drug in order to repay a debt.

The cannabis had a street value of around £5,000 and was found in the two kilo Garcia Sequoia cheese when the 22-year-old suspect was stopped at the airport. Mr Cano was set to make just £1,400 from the deal.

Mr Cano insisted that the cheese was a present for his father but customs officers were suspicious because he used Globespan to fly from Malaga, an airline rarely used by foreign passengers, and had a return ticket for the next day, The Glasgow Daily Record reports.

A customs source told the newspaper: "It was very unusual. Basically we had a Spaniard without any change of clothing, clutching a big cheese."

Mr Cano has appeared before Paisley Sheriff Court and sentencing has been deferred for a month for social inquiry reports.
