Debt denial affects one in three

12/12/2005 15:01:00

More than one in three people in debt keep their money matters secret from their partners, according to the debt charity Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS).

Women find the issue of debt more sensitive than men, with 40 per cent confessing they would not admit to financial hardship compared to 34 per cent of men.

The survey of 1,500 people who had contacted the charity over the last two years also shows that women who co-habit are more secretive than those who are married, as were women over the age of 60.

CCCS chairman Malcolm Hurlston commented: "Being over-indebted at Christmas is bad enough, but it is even worse if you are trying to hide your debt from the family."

"It makes sense for anybody in a close relationship to share problems and we know from earlier research that relationship breakdown is a major cause of debt."
