Credit card companies jostle for consumers

03/01/2006 12:44:00

It may be the start of a new year but that doesn't mean credit card companies will be trying any less to woo consumers with new offers to take on more credit.

Despite the significant debt problem for Brits at the moment, many lenders are still offering cards that may prove too tempting to resist.

Mint has recently unveiled a credit card that offers zero per cent interest for 16 months, while HSBC has announced a 35-day extension to the nine-month free interest already available for those that sign up in January.

Other competition in the market is provided by SkyCard, the offering from Barclaycard and BSkyB, that gives zero per cent interest for 12 months if you transfer your debt from a rival.

Nick White, head of personal finance at price comparison service Uswitch, said: "January is traditionally the time when competition hots up in the credit card market, with new low-rate deals launched in an attempt to attract indebted consumers to move their debt to them."
