Couples keep quiet on debt problems

Couples are finding it difficult to communicate with each other when it comes to the issue of personal finance, according to a new study from the Financial Services Authority (FSA).
Women were found to keep the truth from their partners more than men, with a third of women lying about a debt problem compared to 29 per cent of men who did the same.
Of the 1,400 people surveyed, 40 per cent would use the policy of denial or deceit when questioned about overspending on luxury items.
In fact, debt was deemed such a difficult subject to broach, that many couples would prefer speaking about sex or old flames than admit to financial difficulty.
Christine Webber, a relationship psychologist, commented: "Not knowing how to bring up the subject of money with a loved one without sounding accusatory, mean, or overly serious, can cause incredible relationship stress."
As a result of its findings, the FSA has launched a new "moneylaidbare" website, which will provide people with advice on everyday financial topics.
