Conservative MP backs debt advice

Alan Duncan MP, the shadow trade and industry secretary, has given his backing to a ten-step guide to dealing with debt that has been set up by the website Advice Now.
The MP, who visited the Blackfriars Advice Centre in London, urged anyone who was worried about their debt situation to be proactive in coming to terms with their situation.
He said: "January is the most difficult time of the year in terms of credit card and other debts. Christmas spending can mount up and people often find themselves in difficulty, feeling they have nowhere to turn.
"Consumer debt hit record levels last year, as did individual bankruptcies. Advice centres like this one at Blackfriars, and websites like Advice Now are a godsend for people looking for solutions to what can seem like an increasingly desperate situation."
Mr Duncan also visited the Southwark Credit Union, to lend support to providers of responsible and affordable loans.
"The opportunity for responsible borrowing from organisations such as the Credit Union is key to avoiding unmanageable consumer debt," he said.
