Clevedon's Citizen's Advice Bureau (CAB) is struggling to cope with the number of people seeking advice for debt problems, the Weston Mercury reports.
The Clevedon office has two supervisors and a team of volunteers, but has seen the number of people using their services nearly double in the past year.
North Somerset CAB director Anne Richards said: "There has been a massive increase in the number of people asking for help with personal debt.
"It is people from all walks of life, who are usually encountering problems because of a change in their circumstances.
"It is what we describe as 'middle class debt' where people have run into problems after taking out large mortgages and using store and credit cards."
Mrs Richards also said pensioners were encountering debt problems too as they struggle to pay bills, adding that the average debt for Clevedon residents visiting CAB was a staggering £30,000.
