Citizens Advice welcomes government's energy commitment

The Citizen's Advice Bureau (CAB) has welcomed the government's commitment to tackle the vulnerable customers and those on low incomes facing fuel poverty.

According to the CAB, the problem of fuel poverty in the UK is increasing – one single man living in London was paying £13 a week in fuel charges, a figure which accounted for more than 20 per cent of his income.

In another case the body reported, one woman living on disability living allowance had a total cash income of approximately £70 per week but was paying more than £30 per week for her electricity.

A spokesperson for the CAB said that more and more people are struggling to pay with their household bills and rising fuel costs.

"The first two months of this year bureaux saw an 11 per cent increase in the number of fuel debt cases they were seeing compared to the same period last year," they said.

Meanwhile, the charity Help the Aged branded the government's efforts as inadequate and said more should be done to eradicate fuel poverty, reported the Independent.
