The brother of a woman who committed suicide because she could not cope with her debts has hit out at the hopeless financial situation many students find themselves in.
Lisa Taylor, 26, was found hanging after she had taken on debts totalling £14,000 through a combination of a student loan, a personal loan and credit cards, the Independent reports.
Her brother, Mark, 31, said: "She was hard working, never lazy, but life was unfair. People should be able to get an education without having to suffer.
"I know Tony Blair wants their revenue but there has to be some stop on students borrowing money off lenders."
After her death, it was discovered that Ms Taylor had been inundated with demanding letters from banks and credit card companies and was, at times, receiving up to 20 letters each day, which ultimately proved enough to push her over the edge.
