Britain 'being talked into a recession'
14/07/2008 17:07:00
Amid growing concerns surrounding the state of the country's financial future, an expert has commented the UK may be "talking" itself into a recession where consumer confidence is concerned.
The remarks come from George Derbyshire, chief executive of the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies (NFEA), who describes public confidence as a "fragile flower" which "public commentators" have a responsibility to safeguard.
Responding to the ominous predictions from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) last week, Mr Derbyshire does not deny the economy generally is "facing a difficult time" due to rising living costs, high inflation and the state of the property market.
However, the NFEA leader said: "I believe the greatest danger is that we talk ourselves into recession."
Politicians and financial leaders need to "reflect on the consequences of their statements", he added.
The BCC forecast said if current financial trends continue the UK's business sector is only a quarter away from technical recession.
